Photo T-Shirt: All About Photo T-Shirts
A photo T-shirt features a, near to, true color replica of your very own photo, artwork, or text and can be ordered as a one off piece. Depending on the printing technique used, your photo, artwork, or text can be printed on a variety of colored or plain white T-shirts in varying styles, or other clothing.
Uses & Gift Ideas for Photo T-Shirts
- Bachelor party and bachelorette party tee shirts still remain the number one bestseller – commemorating that last day of freedom with a fun photo T-shirt is a sure way to get the evening going
- Photo T-shirts for group outings, family reunions and sports' clubs are also very popular
- Photo T shirts with your own graphic design and witty phrase go down well as unique and fun birthday gifts, coach gifts, Father's Day gifts and Mother's Day gifts
What you should watch out for when buying a photo tee shirt:
- Always make sure you have chosen the right size, color and style as returning a personalized T-shirt is not possible.
- Make sure that the quality of your photo or artwork is sufficient to be enlarged for printing on the T-shirt. Check the photo resolution requirements on your supplier's website.
- Check that the printing process offered is suitable for your photo T-shirt. Not all printing techniques are suitable for printing photos on T shirts (digital printing directly to the garment produces the best results for photo tee shirts). Make sure that you can select the printing process you require. Pricing for the various printing methods will also be different.
- Most suppliers accept JPG files, if your photo or artwork has been saved otherwise make sure to check that the supplier accepts these files.

- Printing Process: Heat Transfer Printing
The heat transfer process is a simple and low cost method of printing on white T shirts. The image is transferred to a carrier paper and then ironed to the t-shirt. This method produces brilliant color results, however, the rectangular transfer edge remains visible.
- Printing Process: Digital or Direct to Garment Printing (DTG)
Digital or direct to garment printing (DTG) is a fabric printing method that prints an image directly onto the t-shirt through a modified version of a traditional inkjet printer. The ink bonds directly with the fabric to produce a design that can be stretched and pulled without cracking the image. This method can be printed on colored T shirts and is the best method for photo T shirts.
- Printing Process: Sublimation printing
Sublimation printing is normally used on white, synthetic materials (polyester). The photo is transfered to a carrier paper as with heat transfer printing, however, the difference is that only the ink from the photo is transferred to the T shirt and not the transfer itself (no visible transfer edges). This is possible because the ink turns to gas when heated and bonds well to the fabric. This process is suitable for photo t shirts if you want a white polyester shirt – similar to a soccer jersey.
- Printing Process: Flex printing
Flex is a printing technique where the design is cut from a colored foil and then melted to the shirt fabric under high heat to produce a durable (wahes extremely well) and flexible (no cracking) design in brilliant color. Flex printing has a slight sheen to it, is very smooth, contrasts well with the T shirt fabric and is usually more expensive than the afore mentioned methods. Flex printing is not suitable for photo T shirts as only 3 colored printing is possible but is great for printing logos or graphic designs. T shirts with flex printing must be ironed inside out, otherwise the design will melt. It is not ideal for large designs as the fabric is not breathable after flex printing has been applied. Files can only be uploaded as vector graphics.
- Printing Process: Flock printing
Flock printing is similar to flex printing but instead of being smooth and shiny the print has a soft velvet feel to it and is thicker. Colors appear softer than those produced with flex printing.
- Printing Process: Screen Printing
Screen printing produces full color and excellent quality, printing. A screen is made for this printing by stretching t shirt material over a wooden or aluminum frame. A negative copy of your image is applied using a non permeable fabric – this makes a stencil for your final image that allows the ink only to be printed in certain areas. Due to the complicated and pricy process it is usually only used for bulk orders.
