Photo Tiles: Step by Step
- Homemade is always more cost effective and there are various ways to transfer your own photo onto the tile of your choice.
- First of all think about the image you want for your tiles. Depending on how big you want the end result to be you may have to divide your photo into several parts that are then printed onto the individual tiles and are pieced together like a jigsaw.
- Use an editing program to prepare your desired photo or design – make sure you use the best image qualitiy possible.
- Using Paint Thinner: This is a relatively old technique for transferring a photo to a smooth surface. Test this method first on a single tile as results may vary. Print out a mirror image of your photo, place this face down onto your tile and coat with a layer of paint thinner. The paint thinner separates the image from the backing which is how the photo is transferred to the tile. Carefully peel off the photo backing and seal the image with clear varnish.
- Paper Napkin Decoupage: Creating your own photo tiles is just one of the many usages for paper napkin decoupage. You can read more about transferring your photo to tile in our article entitled „Photo Gifts Made Using Paper Napkin Decoupage“. You will need tiles, napkins, Mod Podge and paint brushes.
- Professional Tile Printing: A more durable and washable alternative is to have your photo or art work professionally printed onto the tile of your choice. More information about Custom Photo Tiles >>.
